Sub Station:
Job Types:
Items:
ZESCO
Zambia
Chipata Sub Station
Jack & Sliding
6 x 88 ton transformers to plinth position
The Project
ZESCO constructed a power substation in Chipata which will supply power to Chama and Lundazi districts. The sub substation was scheduled for commissioning in 2016 and will connect the districts to the national grid.
Heavy rains and floods have caused a power deficit in Malawi, forcing ESCOM. which also supplies power to Lundazi and Chama districts to effect load shedding.
The Challengers
The remote location, wet weather conditions and technical challenges of the jacking & sliding of 6 x 88 ton transformers onto plinth position presented the client with high health and safety risks that needed careful planning and meticulous execution.
The client needed a company with the right equipment and technical experience to ensure safe and on-time movement of all 88 ton transformers.
Due to the risk and technical nature of the project, Samson Rigging and Crane Hire, with its decades of experience injacking & sliding of transformers in Africa, were selected as the preferred company to execute the project to ensure safe and on-time execution of all transformer movement & placement.
Samson Rigging and Crane Hire executed the project safely, accurately and completed the job ahead of schedule.
Project Execution
Step 1
88t transformers arriving on site. The transformers were transported to the remote location on low beds.
Step 2
Low bed in position alongside fire wall and plinth – co-ordinating position of low bed in preparation to jack & slide the transformer off the low bed.
Step 3
Jacking & Sliding 88 ton transformer off the truck and onto the sleeper pack using 4 x 100 ton hydraulic jacks.
CASE STUDY 2

Sub Station:
Job Types:
Items:
ZPC (Zimbabwe Power Company)
Zimbabwe
Sherwood Sub Station
Jack & Sliding
240 ton transformers
Project Execution
Step 1
Arriving of 240 ton transformer on site in Zimbabwe after 6 weeks travelling from Durban, South Africa.
Step 2
Typical challenging conditions in Africa’s remote locations requires careful planning and extensive experience. Ensuing the ground conditions and equipment is considered to do the job safely and on-time. Once again, this job was a massive challenge with terrible ground conditions.
Step 3
Wet conditions and deep trenches create a challenging jacking & sliding environment. Our team overcame the wet and soft ground conditions by building adequate support to carry the immense weight of each transformer.
Step 4
Preparing the ground conditions and on completion of a comprehensive safety & risk analysis, the transformer is successfully jacked and slid from the trailer onto the sleeper pack.
Satisfaction Guaranteed!
Samson Rigging and Crane Hire’s impeccable safety record is backed by strict compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements for all equipment and operators, in addition to all valid licenses and crane operator certificates, which are non-negotiable.
